advice on irritable bowel syndrome

Irritable Bowel syndrome IBS , is something which affects
10-20% of people at any one time

It is more common in women, 2:1 . And symptoms often fluctuate

Diet is said to be key, and often wheat and dairy are blamed.
A nutritionist may find key factors, and food sensitivities
It is seen more in Western Diets, factors as the food supply
additives, refined foods may be implicated

symptoms:

abdominal pain/swelling and cramping often relieved by emptying of bowel
change in bowel habits, such as diarrhoea, constipation or, sometimes, both,
excess gas or bloating,
urgency to go to the toilet, or incontinence if a toilet is not nearby,
a feeling that you have not fully emptied your bowel, and
passing of mucus from your rectum (back passage).

the causes are put down to a mix of factors

diet, stress are often cited
an abnormality with how the muscles move food through the digestive tract,
digestive organs with increased sensitivity to pain,
a problem with how the central nervous system controls the digestive system,
immune problems
an unusual response to infection, and
environmental, dietary, and genetic factors that are as yet unknown.

Given this, some general lifestyle and mechanical and diet approaches may be helpful

Training of the bowels, to sit on the toilet just after each meal, may help to establish a daily
pattern.
Approaches on diet, a food diary, Regular eating, and taking time on meals
- reducing stress, through relaxation techniques, hypnotherapy
are also being discussed with people.
Moderate exercise may play an important role too
